The Soviet Union, USA, Europe and Japan have sent towards Mars many probes, orbiters, landers and rovers in order to investigate the planet's surface, climate and geological structure. Only about 1/3 of all missions to Mars end with a success. Many of them developed failures before the end of the missions or even in the first moments of lift-off.
